In the follow-up of the Roundtable of Wuzhen, the Foundation and the Development Research Centre gathered again, in May 2009, Mr. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and Mr. Xu Kuangdi, president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

It is in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, that was held the second intercultural Roundtable on the topic "Heritage preservation in the context of accelerated urbanisation process", in the presence of Mr. Ge Hongling, Mayor of Chengdu, and of Mr. Zhang Yutai, President of DRC.

The discussions covered the following topics:

• The significance of cultural heritage preservation for urban development
• Opportunities and challenges in heritage preservation
• How to bridge the antagonisms between modernisation and preservation?
• Reconstruction after earthquake and heritage preservation
